Voice in flow – experience and learn flow in singing

Flow – we encounter this term more and more often in everyday life, people strive for this blissful state that blurs the sense of time and space. But what exactly is the secret of flow? How can you achieve it? And above all, how does the so-called flow cycle influence my work as a singer?

The book answers all these questions by vividly explaining the latest scientific findings in flow research and relating them to the principle of “inner security”. Flow is not a myth, but a process to be discovered.

Voice in the Flow is the first book to explicitly address flow in singing and provides the reader with numerous tips and exercises to help them experience flow on stage. Previously unpublished notated singing exercises round off the practical part of the book

Voice in Flow is therefore a scientific book about flow, but above all a practical book for singers. The exercises described in the book* are expanded and further illustrated here on the website by video contributions from the author Rabih Lahoud.

The notated flow songs* can also be listened to here and the piano accompaniment supports independent learning.

The Autor

Rabih Lahoud is first and foremost a singer, but he is also a singing teacher and composer. His successful jazz band Masaa, with which he has already released four albums, was awarded the German Jazz Prize in 2021. Lahoud is also a permanent member of Markus Stockhausen’s band Eternal Voyage. As a soloist, Rabih Lahoud has been involved in numerous productions and festivals. He works with various orchestras and ensembles, such as the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the Tonhalle Orchestra Düsseldorf.

In 2018, Rabih Lahoud was nominated for the ECHO ‘Best National Jazz Singer’, in 2021 he received the WDR Jazz Prize in the category ‘Music Cultures’ and with his band Masaa he received the German Jazz Prize in the category ‘Album Vocal of the Year’.

He always sees himself as a musical border crosser – between styles, between cultures and people, and in doing so, he always explores what unites the different (musical) worlds.

Lahoud is one of the most sought-after vocal coaches in Germany and coaches numerous choirs and ensembles, such as Maybebop, OnAir and the Bonner Jazzchor. His passion is teaching popular singing styles and the topic of “flow in the voice”, for which he has deepened his scientific knowledge and commitment in flow research.
He is a lecturer in methodology and vocal technique in popular singing styles at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden and is responsible for world music and pop music design at the Popakademie Mannheim. He was a visiting professor for jazz singing at the Jazz Institute Berlin.

Have a look

The book “Voice in Flow” is the result of my extensive research and studies on the subject of flow. I wanted to understand why flow often didn't work in the classroom and on stage, and I no longer wanted to leave it to chance when I was in the flow with my voice. I then developed methods and practical exercises to improve myself as a singer and, in a second step, to provide my students with effective tools for practicing flow. The experience that my exercises were fruitful became the greatest motivation to write this book. However, I realized quite quickly that I didn't just want to publish a book with exercises, but a work that also included the scientific findings of flow. To do that, I had to delve deeply into neuroscience, with the realization that it is enormously helpful for all singers to understand these phenomena. That is why this book has both an extensive scientific section and a practical section. Demystifying the topic of flow is my main concern, because I firmly believe that anyone can learn to flow and bring it to the stage.

Flow Exercises

The book contains numerous practical physical exercises to answer and work on the flow questions explained there. All exercises are designed to practice flow by establishing inner security. To make the exercises described in the book more accessible, these explanatory videos can be used as an aid.

Flow Songs
